Types of Sports Injuries
There are two main types of sports related injuries; acute and overuse injuries. Acute injuries are caused by sudden trauma such as a fall, twist or collision. Acute injuries can include:
- Broken bones
- Ligament injuries
- Muscle and tendon injuries
Overuse injuries occur gradually over time, when an athlete repeats an activity so often that the part of the body being used never has time to heal. Usually the pain associated with overuse injury is low grade and the athlete can often play through it. Repeat injuries may turn into overuse conditions having the potential to sideline an athlete for the rest of the season. To keep athletes in the game, overuse injuries need to be diagnosed and treated by a physician as soon as possible.
